PIPER » J3

Did you know that the Piper J-3 Cub, with 20,038 aircraft produced, is the ninth most produced aircraft in the world? This light American aircraft was made by Piper Aircraft between the years of 1937-1947 and is well known for its ability to handle well at low-speeds, it's lightweight design, and affordability. In terms of its design, the Piper Cub is a high-wing, strut-braced monoplane made with a large-area rectangular wing, and its fuselage is a welded steel frame covered in fabric. The Piper J-3 Cub is powered by a piston engine driving a fixed-pitch propeller. Though originally designed as a trainer aircraft, the Piper J3 has a long general aviation history as well, including it's role as the L-4 Grasshopper in WWII as well as other roles in reconnaissance, liaison and ground control. Many Piper Cub's are still in use today, most of them as bush aircraft, and the standard chrome yellow paint of the Piper J-3 Cub is fondly referred to in aircraft circles as, “Cub Yellow” paint.
